Larian Studios Reveal a New Divinity, Calling it Their Most Ambitious RPG to Date

The buzz around this year's gaming ceremony has been intense, especially after presenter Geoff Keighley posted an enigmatic image of a strange statue. The secret has now been solved. Larian Studios is developing a brand-new Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was presented with a daring trailer featuring intense imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the literal opening of infernal gates.

Not the Expected Sequel

Anyone anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. The studio warned that a follow-up to its beloved RPGs is not being worked on now.

However, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the main series. This choice of words implies that the team could be crafting a real-time experience rather than another turn-based title. At this moment, we can only guess, as only a teaser video is available.

What Makes Divinity Special

The Divinity series is universally respected and it's fair to claim it pioneered the recent resurgence of deep computer role-playing games. These games are defined by detailed worlds, choice-driven narratives, and flexible progression—qualities that recently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its universe is familiar fare, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the immense freedom granted to the player.

In contrast to modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is brimming with specialized paths you can achieve by choosing a specific type of character with a specific history of choices.

The series is also wonderfully permissive, letting players to find creative solutions both in story and combat. Nearly every quest can be completed in multiple ways, frequently in lateral fashion.

  • You might progress the story because you heeded something an animal companion shared.
  • Or, you could bypass a challenge by moving environmental hazards in a unorthodox way.

More to Come

It is this design philosophy that allow people to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games of all time. Now, the RPG community can get ready for a new entry in this groundbreaking franchise.
