In a notable development ahead of next year's general election, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition comes in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal youth-led demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the removal of the sitting government.
A Commitment to Tackle Youth Demands
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly vowed to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This promise comes after the violent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which led to significant casualties.
"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.
The September revolt was sparked by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for deeper discontent stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.
Details of the New Electoral Agreement
According to the formal agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political class. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in forming the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.
Broader Political Discussions Taking Place
In a separate event, the sitting interim prime minister recently held consultations with several major political leaders. These talks included former prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the uprising.
Following these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a collective responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and open environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
